AARN Cup Series Race #16 Recap

Michigan International Speedway

The AARN Cup Series returned to Michigan International Speedway for Race 16 of the regular season, and while the race featured only a single caution, the battle at the front was anything but boring.

Drivers spent much of the afternoon searching for speed on long green-flag runs, with track position proving critical throughout the 100-lap event. When the checkered flag finally flew, it was Coulter Clark (#54) standing in victory lane after one of the most complete performances of the season.

Clark Breaks Through at Michigan

Starting from the pole, Coulter Clark controlled the race from the outset and never relinquished command for long.

Clark led 42 laps, earned the race victory bonus, and secured a maximum 46-point day, helping him climb from fifth to fourth in the championship standings.

The win couldn’t have come at a better time as the regular season enters its final stretch and drivers continue positioning themselves for the Chase.

Vadnais Makes a Statement

While Clark grabbed the win, Gregory Vadnais (#24) may have been the biggest surprise of the afternoon.

Vadnais led a race-high 56 laps and finished second, collecting 45 points and moving into ninth place in the standings. His strong run trimmed the gap to the Chase cut line to just 6 points, putting him firmly in playoff contention.

With only a handful of races remaining, Vadnais has quickly become one of the hottest drivers in the series.

Winstone Delivers a Career Day

Chris Winstone (#37) rounded out the podium with a third-place finish, scoring 43 points and one of the strongest runs of his season.

The result helped Winstone jump two positions in the standings and provided valuable momentum heading into the next race.

Championship Picture Tightens

At the top of the standings, points leader Zackery King endured a difficult afternoon by his standards.

King finished 16th and scored just 29 points, allowing several drivers behind him to gain ground.

Shawn Hughes capitalized with a fifth-place finish and now sits just 18 points behind King in the championship standings.

Meanwhile:

  • Chris Romano remains third, 47 points back.
  • Coulter Clark jumps to fourth after the victory.
  • Jordane Whyte rounds out the top five.

The fight for playoff positions also intensified, with Gregory Vadnais moving to within six points of the cut line while Corey Powell currently holds the final Chase position.

The Lone Caution

Michigan was largely a clean race.

The event featured just one caution period and only four lead changes, making track position and long-run pace the deciding factors.

The long green-flag stretches rewarded drivers who could manage tires and maintain speed over an extended run, creating a race that felt more like a strategic chess match than a survival contest.
