Chuckry Wins Auto Club, Cuts ARCA Championship Lead to a Single Point

FONTANA, Calif. — Dylan Chuckry keeps adding victories. Jason Thomas is nearly out of breathing room. Chuckry captured his fourth win of the AARN ARCA Development Series season at Auto Club Speedway, finishing 0.920 seconds ahead of Matthew Erickson and turning a 15-point championship deficit into a one-point gap. With only two races remaining, the inaugural title fight is closer than ever.
The No. 28 started fifth, led 19 of the race’s 50 laps and completed the night without an incident. His 43-point performance moved him from fourth to second in the standings, directly behind Thomas, who recovered from 17th on the grid to finish ninth. Thomas now leads with 245 points to Chuckry’s 244. Auto Club did not require a caution-filled spectacle to make a substantial championship impact.
Two cautions accounted for six laps, and only three drivers led during the 50-lap event. At the finish, the first 11 cars were separated by less than five seconds, with several championship contenders collecting valuable results while others surrendered ground. Chuckry’s victory was another example of making a strong performance count. He did not lead the most laps, and he did not start from the front row.
But he combined time at the front with a clean race and the winning finish, collecting bonuses for leading, winning and recording zero incidents. Four victories in seven starts have now brought Chuckry within a single point of a driver who has competed in all eight rounds. There is still a championship to finish, but the No. 28 has erased nearly all of the disadvantage that came with making one fewer start. Justin Hewitt was the driver who spent the most time in control at Auto Club.
Starting sixth, Hewitt led 27 laps, more than half the race distance. The No. 24 ultimately finished fourth, 1.673 seconds behind Chuckry, with bonuses for leading and leading the most laps bringing his total to 35 points. The speed was there to contend for the victory, but Hewitt left with a top-five finish rather than the trophy. Erickson was the closest challenger at the checkered flag.
The No. 99 started second, led four laps and finished in the same position, less than a second behind the winner. His 36-point night moved him from seventh to sixth in the championship and reduced his deficit to Thomas from 22 points to 15. That was an important response after missing Michigan and losing ground in the standings. Erickson is back within reach, with two races still available to turn a runner-up performance into something more.
Burley Begley completed the podium after starting from the pole. Although he did not lead a lap, Begley finished only 1.214 seconds behind Chuckry and followed his third-place finish at Michigan with another third at Auto Club. Consecutive podiums have given the No. 37 a productive stretch as the season approaches its conclusion. Douglas Scalice rounded out the top five after advancing from 10th.
The No. 16 completed all 50 laps and finished 2.603 seconds behind the winner, collecting 32 points. Scalice remains fifth in the championship, but the result brought him three points closer to Thomas. He now has 231 points, only 14 behind the lead. It was not the breakthrough victory Scalice is still seeking, but it was the kind of finish that keeps him involved with time running short.
Right behind him, Dustin Seaton delivered a strong sixth-place run. The No. 31 finished just 0.018 seconds behind Scalice and completed the race with zero incidents. That clean-race bonus gave Seaton 32 points, matching Scalice’s total despite finishing one position lower. For a driver whose early-season races included some difficult moments, a full-distance, incident-free finish near the front was a valuable result.
Adam Benefiel finished seventh, followed by John Shields in eighth. Shields recorded the fastest lap of the race at 40.114 seconds, earning an additional point. Thomas finished ninth, and Jason Scales completed the top 10. Brian Cunningham followed in 11th, only 4.711 seconds behind Chuckry.
Thomas’ night was a mixture of recovery and championship damage limitation. Starting 17th put the points leader well behind several of his closest rivals. He gained eight positions, completed the full distance and recorded zero incidents, adding a bonus point to his ninth-place result. Those 29 points were enough to retain first place—but only barely.
Chuckry outscored him by 14. What had been a 15-point cushion between the two entering Auto Club is now one point. In that context, Thomas’ clean-race bonus was anything but an afterthought. Daniel Dunaway, meanwhile, could not carry his Michigan momentum into another front-running result.
After winning the previous round and closing within two points of Thomas, Dunaway finished 13th at Auto Club, one lap down. His 24-point night dropped him from second to fourth in the championship. He now has 238 points, seven behind Thomas and one behind third-place Benefiel. The setback was costly, but it did not remove him from the fight.
Benefiel’s seventh-place finish actually gained him one point on Thomas. He remains third with 239, six off the lead. Behind Dunaway, Scalice has 231 and Erickson has 230. That leaves six drivers within 15 points of the championship lead, and the first four separated by only seven.
With no Chase reset in the Development Series, those are the points they carry into the final two races. There were useful results farther through the field as well. Jeffrey Johnson completed all 50 laps in 12th, while Chris Pierce finished 14th, one lap down. Austin Kelley placed 15th after starting third, and Mike Rovillo and William Kalai were the two starters listed as disconnected before the finish.
Twelve drivers completed the entire race distance. For the championship contenders, however, Auto Club’s lasting impact is concentrated at the top. Thomas still leads, but Chuckry has won half of the eight races held and is now directly on his heels. Benefiel and Dunaway are within seven points.
Scalice and Erickson remain close enough that one strong night could put either into the immediate battle for first. There is no room to dismiss a bonus point, a recovered position or a clean finish as a small detail anymore. Chuckry left Auto Club with his fourth trophy. Thomas left with a one-point lead.
Two races remain to decide which matters most.
