  • Hughes Wins the Darlington War

    Hughes Wins the Darlington War

Hughes Executes Late to Win Darlington War The All American Racing Network Cup Series faced one of its toughest challenges of the season in Race 6 as the series visited the legendary Darlington Raceway. Known as “The Lady in Black,” the historic South Carolina oval once again tested drivers with its narrow racing groove, heavy tire wear, and unforgiving outside wall. After 147 laps of long green-flag runs and constant pressure, Shawn Hughes emerged victorious after a perfectly timed late-race charge to the front. Hughes started 6th and kept his car within the lead group throughout the race before making his move in the closing portion of the event. He ultimately led 19 laps and crossed the finish line 2.010 seconds ahead of the field. Even more impressive, Hughes completed the entire race without recording a single incident, a rare accomplishment at a track where even the smallest mistake can end a driver’s night. Early Race: Combs Sets the Pace The early portion of the race belonged to Kameron M. Combs, who started from the pole position and immediately established himself as the driver to beat. Combs controlled the race for much of the afternoon, leading a race-high 63 laps while consistently maintaining one of the fastest cars on track. His pace was highlighted by the fastest lap of the race at 29.518 seconds, the quickest circuit recorded by any driver. For much of the race it appeared Combs had the field covered, but Darlington’s long runs and tire falloff eventually allowed Hughes to close the gap and challenge for the lead in the closing stages. Combs ultimately finished second, capping off a dominant but frustrating afternoon. Hissong and Clark Remain in Contention Behind the two front-runners, Robert Hissong delivered one of the most consistent performances of the race. Starting 3rd, Hissong remained near the front throughout the afternoon and even led 28 laps during the middle portion of the race before ultimately finishing third. Coulter Clark also spent much of the event inside the lead group. After starting on the front row, Clark remained competitive through the long runs and brought his car home fourth. Rounding out the Top 5 was Zackery King, who moved forward from 7th on the starting grid to secure another strong finish. Average Running Position (Estimated Race Pace) Using lap trends, laps led, and finishing patterns, these drivers appeared to spend the most time running near the front of the field. Driver Estimated Avg Running Position Kameron M. Combs ~2.8 Shawn Hughes ~3.5 Robert Hissong ~4.0 Coulter Clark ~4.5 Zackery King ~6.3 These five drivers clearly controlled the pace for the majority of the race. Hard Chargers: Drivers Who Drove Through the Field Darlington’s long runs allowed several drivers to steadily work their way forward during the race. Two of the most impressive drives came from Tony Creager and Matt Oplinger, who both gained 14 positions during the race. Tony CreagerStarted: 23rdFinished: 9thPositions gained: +14 Matt OplingerStarted: 24thFinished: 10thPositions gained: +14 Gaining that many positions at Darlington is extremely difficult due to how hard passing becomes on worn tires. Mid-Pack Standout Drives Several drivers quietly delivered strong performances that helped round out the top ten. Kristopher Foote finished 6th after starting 12th, steadily working his way forward throughout the race. Chris Romano brought his car home 7th, while Jordane Whyte secured an 8th-place finish to complete the top ten group just ahead of the hard-charging Creager and Oplinger. These performances highlight the importance of patience and long-run speed at Darlington. Tough Breaks Darlington once again punished drivers who pushed too hard against the narrow racing groove. Several drivers who started inside the top ten saw their races slip away due to the track’s demanding conditions, dropping them deeper into the field by the time the checkered flag waved. At a track known for producing the famous “Darlington stripe,” simply surviving the race distance without damage proved to be a major accomplishment.
