HAMPTON, Ga. — Howard Peeples entered the second race of the AARN O’Reilly Series Chase needing to gain ground. He left EchoPark Speedway with a victory, a major championship swing and only nine points separating him from Chase leader Christian Barnes.
Peeples drove from 12th on the starting grid to the front of the field and led 33 of 90 laps, surviving five cautions and a frantic closing battle to capture his second victory of the season. Dave W. Allen finished only 0.081 seconds behind, while Barnes crossed the line third just 0.182 seconds back.
The top five were separated by less than seven-tenths of a second, creating one of the closest and most consequential finishes of the season.
For Peeples, the victory could not have arrived at a better time. With four Chase races remaining, he now sits second in the standings and only nine points behind Barnes in the fight for the Ideal Family LLC O’Reilly Open Series championship.
Peeples Works Forward From Row Six
Starting 12th placed Peeples behind every other Chase contender and left him with considerable work to do over the 90-lap event.
The five caution periods repeatedly regrouped the field, but Peeples did more than simply capitalize on restarts. Once the No. 29 reached the front, it remained one of the strongest cars in the field.
Peeples led 33 laps and earned bonus points for leading and winning. His charge from 12th to first also represented the largest positional gain among the drivers who completed the full race distance.
Each restart created another opportunity for the challengers behind him, particularly during the final portion of the race. Peeples remained composed through the pressure and kept the lead as the field raced toward the checkered flag.
With Allen, Barnes, Jason Thomas and Gary May all within striking distance, there was no room for error.
Peeples did not make one.
Allen Falls Just 0.081 Seconds Short
Dave W. Allen nearly completed an equally impressive drive.
After starting 11th, Allen climbed through the field and positioned himself directly behind Peeples for the final run. The two crossed the finish line separated by only 0.081 seconds, with Allen recording his second podium of the season and one of his strongest results of the Chase.
The runner-up finish moved Allen’s Chase total to 1,092 points. He remains sixth in the standings, 48 points behind Barnes, but gained important ground with four races still available.
Allen’s performance also demonstrated how dramatically EchoPark’s cautions and restarts reshaped the running order. The two drivers who started 12th and 11th ultimately finished first and second.
Barnes Protects the Championship Lead
Barnes started from the pole and entered the evening leading the Chase standings after winning the regular-season championship.
Although he did not lead a lap, Barnes remained in contention throughout the race and finished third, only 0.182 seconds behind Peeples. The result gave him another valuable podium and allowed him to retain the Chase lead.
Barnes leaves EchoPark with 1,140 points, but his advantage has been reduced to nine over Peeples.
With four races remaining at Michigan International Speedway, Indianapolis, New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Iowa Speedway, the championship battle has become considerably tighter.
Barnes still controls the standings, but Peeples is now close enough that a single position could change the championship lead.
King Dominates Early, Leaves With a Costly Finish
No driver controlled more of the race than Zackery King.
King led a race-high 44 laps after starting second, collecting bonus points for leading and leading the most laps. For much of the event, the No. 1 appeared capable of leaving EchoPark with a victory and potentially taking control of the Chase.
Instead, his race ended after 57 laps.
King was credited with 13th place, 33 laps behind, after the official results listed his entry as disconnected. The disappointing finish overshadowed a performance in which he led nearly half the race.
King remains third in the Chase standings with 1,109 points, but he now trails Barnes by 31. His speed remains evident—he has three victories, nine top-five finishes and 430 laps led this season—but EchoPark became a significant missed opportunity.
With only four races remaining, recovering those lost points will require strong finishes throughout the rest of the Chase.
Tight Finish Extends Through the Top Five
Jason Thomas delivered one of his best performances of the season, finishing fourth after starting ninth. He crossed the line only 0.430 seconds behind Peeples and moved into the eighth Chase position, one point behind John Cook.
Gary May completed the top five, finishing 0.643 seconds behind the winner. Although May did not qualify for the Chase, his presence in the lead group influenced the battle among the championship contenders.
Shane Hatfield advanced from 16th to sixth and earned the clean-race bonus after completing the event with zero incidents. Joseph Essenberg finished seventh, one lap behind, while Jayden Porter placed eighth after leading 13 laps.
Chuckie W. Allen and Ryan Testa completed the top 10.
Chase Battle Compresses After Race Two
Barnes continues to lead, but Peeples’ victory created the first major shift of the six-race postseason.
Only 40 points separate first-place Barnes from fifth-place Joseph Essenberg. Testa, Allen, Cook and Thomas remain within range, but each will need to begin closing the gap before the Chase reaches its final stretch.

After a five-car fight decided by less than seven-tenths of a second at EchoPark, the race for the championship is beginning to take shape—and it is far from settled.
