JOLIET, Ill. — Jordane Whyte converted one of the strongest performances of his season into a victory at Chicagoland Speedway, holding off Chris Romano by less than one second to win Race 19 of the AARN Cup Series regular season.
Whyte led 54 of the 134 laps and survived a race featuring 19 lead changes among nine different drivers. Coulter Clark matched Whyte with 54 laps led and remained positioned to contend for the podium until a speeding penalty during the final green-flag pit cycle derailed his afternoon.
When the cycle was complete and the field settled into the closing run, Whyte had the opportunity he needed. The No. 83 completed the job, beating Romano to the checkered flag by 0.986 seconds and earning his fourth victory of the season.
Whyte and Clark Set the Pace
Whyte qualified fifth, but due to a grid penalty resulting from Sonoma, he started in the back, while Clark rolled from the pole in the No. 54. Together, they controlled 108 of the event’s 134 laps and emerged as the two primary forces throughout the afternoon.
Neither driver held an uninterrupted grip on the race. Chicagoland produced frequent movement at the front, with 19 lead changes and nine competitors spending time in command. W. Casey Gross led 10 laps, Romano led eight, Elijah Maupin led three and Douglas Scalice led two as different strategies and changing track conditions continued to cycle the running order.
Whyte remained in position through each phase of the race. His 54 laps led matched Clark for the race high, and the No. 83 was still within striking distance when the final green-flag pit sequence began.
That sequence ultimately became the decisive moment.
Pit-Road Penalty Costs Clark a Contending Finish
Clark had the speed to contend for a top-three result and potentially challenge Whyte for the victory, but his race changed during the final round of green-flag stops.
The No. 54 was assessed a black flag for speeding on pit road, forcing Clark to serve the penalty and surrender valuable track position. With the field stretched out under green, there was no immediate opportunity to regain what had been lost.
Clark eventually finished 10th, one lap behind the leaders. The result did not erase the strength of his performance—he earned bonus points for leading and sharing the race-high total—but it turned what appeared capable of becoming another podium into a costly afternoon.
Despite the setback, Clark remains fourth in the regular-season standings, 40 points behind leader Zackery King.
Romano and Hughes Complete the Podium
Romano continued his strong summer with a runner-up finish in the No. 44. After starting fourth and leading eight laps, he stayed close enough to pressure Whyte through the final run but crossed the line just short of the victory.
The result was Romano’s eighth podium of the season and moved him within 20 points of the championship lead.
Shawn Hughes finished third after starting seventh, completing another consistent points day. Hughes has now recorded 16 top-10 finishes through 19 starts and sits only seven points behind King with seven regular-season races remaining.
The margins at the top are tightening. King continues to lead with 707 points, but Hughes has closed to 700 and Romano sits third with 687.
Maupin, Rovillo Make Major Gains
Elijah Maupin delivered one of the most important performances of the race, advancing from 11th to fourth while leading three laps and completing the event without an incident.
The finish moved Maupin into the 10th and final Chase position with 565 points. His margin, however, is only four points over Corey Powell as the regular season enters its closing stretch.
Mike Rovillo produced one of the best races of his season in the No. 2. Starting 13th, Rovillo climbed eight positions to finish fifth, completed all 134 laps and recorded zero incidents.
The result moved Rovillo up one position to 14th in the standings and added another top-five finish to his season totals.
Thadeus Freel Jr. finished sixth, while Gross completed the race’s largest charge by climbing from 18th to seventh. Gross led 10 laps and strengthened his position inside the Chase field. Dakoda Cydrus finished eighth in his first start, with Marc Bender ninth and Clark completing the top 10.
Early Trouble Hurts Combs
Kameron Combs entered Chicagoland sixth in the championship standings, but an early issue ended his chance to capitalize on a sixth-place starting position.
The No. 15 completed only 10 laps before disconnecting and was credited with 19th place. The result dropped Combs two positions in the standings to eighth.
Combs remains 41 points above the Chase cut line, but the lost opportunity was significant. Only 48 points now separate Gross in sixth from Powell in 11th, leaving little margin for another difficult race during the final seven events.
The Chase Battle Compresses
The fight near the postseason cut line has become one of the closest battles in the series.
Gross holds sixth with 609 points, followed by Scalice at 607 and Combs at 606. Gregory Vadnais sits ninth with 581, Maupin occupies the final Chase position with 565 and Powell is only four points outside at 561.
One poor result could move a driver several positions. One breakthrough performance could completely reverse the picture.

Seven Races Remain
Whyte leaves Chicagoland with another victory and continues to establish himself as a serious postseason threat. Romano and Hughes gained ground in the championship fight, while Maupin’s fourth-place finish moved him onto the right side of the Chase cut line.
For Clark and Combs, Chicagoland demonstrated how quickly a strong afternoon can change. A pit-road violation and an early mechanical or connection issue were enough to turn potential points gains into costly finishes.
Only seven races remain before the Chase field is finalized. At the top, King’s advantage has been reduced to seven points. Around the cut line, just four points separate the final transfer position from elimination.
The final stretch of the AARN Cup Series regular season has officially arrived.
