Peeples Wins Kentucky Thriller as Ideal Racing Delivers Statement Night

SPARTA, Ky. — Defending AARN Truck Series champion Howard Peeples returned to Victory Lane Wednesday night, surviving a caution-filled Kentucky Speedway showdown and holding off a tightly packed group at the finish. Peeples led 25 laps and crossed the line only 0.342 seconds ahead of Shawn Hughes to capture Race 4 of the Ideal Family LLC AARN Truck Series season. Elijah Maupin finished just two-thousandths of a second behind Hughes in third, while championship leader Chris Romano placed fourth only 0.451 seconds behind the winner. The first six trucks were separated by less than eight-tenths of a second after 103 laps, concluding a race that featured seven cautions, 16 lead changes and nine different leaders.

Peeples’ first victory of Season 2 moved him into seventh in the driver standings and capped a huge night for Ideal Racing, which placed three trucks inside the top nine. Peeples Returns to Victory Lane Peeples began the race from third and spent much of the evening near the front of the field. The No. 29 led 25 laps as the running order repeatedly changed around him. Seven cautions for 21 laps prevented anyone from building a lasting advantage and continually returned the contenders to close-quarters racing.

Peeples remained in position through every reset. When the race reached its decisive final run, he had Hughes, Maupin, Romano, Gary May and Daryl W. Johnson stacked closely behind him. The six drivers reached the finish line separated by only 0.800 seconds.

Peeples held them all off. The victory earned him 40 race points along with bonuses for leading and winning, producing an event-high total of 42 points. It was his first win of the season and his first since securing the inaugural Truck Series championship at Homestead-Miami. After a difficult start to his title defense—including an early exit at St. Petersburg—the Kentucky victory moved Peeples from eighth to seventh in the standings.

He now has 118 points and sits 24 above the current Chase cut line. Hughes Misses Victory by 0.342 Seconds Hughes delivered one of the strongest drives of the night after starting 10th. The No. 75 steadily climbed through the field and positioned itself directly behind Peeples for the finish. Hughes turned the fastest lap of the race at 31.136 seconds, but could not find enough room to complete the winning pass.

He finished second by 0.342 seconds and earned 36 total points. The result moved Hughes two positions higher in the standings to fifth. He now has 123 points, only six behind third-place Dave W. Allen and 29 above the postseason cut.

Hughes’ runner-up finish also provided an important boost for Scalice-Bender Racing on a night when several of the organization’s other entries encountered difficulties. Maupin Charges From 16th to Third Elijah Maupin produced the largest forward charge among the podium finishers. Starting 16th, Maupin gained 13 positions and crossed the line third—only 0.344 seconds behind Peeples and 0.002 behind Hughes. The No. 66 completed all 103 laps and earned 34 points.

Although Maupin did not collect a bonus, the podium represented his best result of the season and continued a strong stretch following his fourth-place finish at St. Petersburg. Maupin remains sixth in the championship with 122 points. He is only one point behind Hughes and seven behind Allen. Four races into the season, Maupin has recorded two top-five finishes and has completed 325 of the 327 possible laps.

Romano Protects the Championship Lead Romano did not earn his third victory of the season, but another strong finish allowed him to remain firmly in control of the standings. Starting sixth, the No. 44 led three laps and finished fourth, 0.451 seconds behind Peeples. Romano collected 34 total points, including a bonus for leading. The Revolution Racing driver has now finished inside the top five in all four races this season: First at Daytona Fifth at Texas First at St. Petersburg Fourth at Kentucky Romano leaves Kentucky with 152 points and a 20-point advantage over Tyler Wagner.

His margin entering the race had been 16 points. Even without winning, Romano once again maximized his night and continued building the most consistent record in the series. May and Johnson Complete the Lead Pack Gary May finished fifth after starting ninth, completing the race with zero incidents and earning a clean-race bonus. May’s 33-point result moved him from fifth to fourth in the standings.

He now has 126 points, only three behind Allen and six behind Wagner. Daryl W. Johnson completed the tightly packed top six. The No. 8 led three laps and finished only 0.800 seconds behind Peeples in Johnson’s first start of the season.

Together with Peeples and Allen, Johnson helped Ideal Racing produce the strongest combined team performance at Kentucky. Wagner Leads Early but Slips to Eighth Tyler Wagner started from the pole and controlled 27 laps, the second-highest total of the race. The No. 22 remained in the lead rotation throughout the opening and middle portions of the event but fell outside the primary battle during the closing run. Wagner finished eighth, 1.424 seconds behind Peeples.

Although the result ended his streak of three consecutive top-five finishes, Wagner retained second in the standings with 132 points. He now trails Romano by 20 and holds a three-point advantage over Allen. Wagner has not yet won this season, but two podiums, four top-10 finishes and 55 laps led have kept him among the championship leaders. Bray Leads the Most, Finishes One Lap Down No driver led more laps than Lucas Bray.

Bray started fourth and paced the field for 37 laps, earning bonuses for leading and leading the most. For much of the race, the Revolution Racing driver appeared capable of contending for the victory. His final result did not reflect that speed. Bray fell one lap behind and finished 16th after completing 102 of the 103 laps.

The 23-point night moved him two positions higher in the standings, but he remains 22nd and 36 points below the current cut. Kentucky became a major missed opportunity after Bray controlled more laps than any other competitor. Scalice Loses Ground After Difficult Finish Douglas Scalice entered Kentucky fourth in points and comfortably inside the Chase field. His race quickly became a fight to limit the damage.

Scalice started eighth but completed only 97 laps and finished 21st, six laps behind the winner. The No. 16 earned 16 points and dropped four positions in the standings to eighth. Scalice still occupies a postseason position with 110 points, but his cushion above the cut has been reduced to 16. The result also contributed to Scalice-Bender Racing losing the team championship lead.

Hughes finished second and Marc Bender advanced from 24th to 12th, but Scalice’s difficult night limited the organization’s overall Kentucky total. Battle Around the Cut Line Tightens Jason Thomas continues to hold the 10th and final Chase position after finishing 11th at Kentucky. Thomas has 100 points, six ahead of John Shields and seven ahead of Gregory Vadnais. Shields finished 10th and gained one position in the standings, while Vadnais placed 15th after leading three laps.

Ideal Racing Produces the Strongest Team Night Peeples’ victory led a major Kentucky performance for Ideal Racing. Johnson finished sixth, Allen placed ninth and James Hutson completed 102 laps in 17th. Chuckie W.

Allen was credited with 24th after completing 84 laps. Ideal Racing accumulated a race-high 136 team points, significantly closing the gap in the season-long team championship. Revolution Racing moved into first overall despite finishing second in the Kentucky team results. Romano’s fourth-place finish helped the organization overtake Scalice-Bender Racing in the standings.

He survived seven cautions, nine different leaders and a final margin that placed the top six within eight-tenths of a second.

The victory moved him farther above the Chase cut and reminded the field that the defending champion remains capable of winning when the pressure is highest. Romano continues to control the championship, but the competition directly behind him is tightening. Only 14 points separate Wagner in second from Maupin in sixth, while Peeples now sits four points farther back. In the team championship, Revolution Racing has moved to the top—but Ideal Racing’s statement performance at Kentucky placed three organizations within eight points of one another.

Four races are complete. The battles for both AARN Truck Series championships are only beginning to take shape
