Love Masters the Lady in Black as O’Reilly Series Season 2 Opens With Wild Darlington Night

DARLINGTON, S.C. — The second season of the AARN O’Reilly Series opened Sunday night at one of the toughest places possible, and Darlington Raceway wasted little time reminding the field why it has earned the nickname “The Lady in Black.” By the end of 110 laps, the season opener had produced five cautions, 15 lead changes among nine different leaders and a long list of drivers who simply could not tame Darlington. Through all of it, Jamel Love put together the strongest performance of the night, combining outright speed with a well-executed late-race strategy to win the opening race of Season 2. Love started from the pole in the No. 1 and spent much of the evening exactly where he began it—at the front.

He led a race-high 48 laps, survived the changing complexion of the race and then made the right calls when strategy became increasingly important late. When the final cycle played out, Love had done enough to keep control. He crossed the line 3.378 seconds ahead of Aaron Gerwitz, earning 40 race points along with bonuses for leading, leading the most laps and winning. The 43-point night gives Love the first championship lead of the new season.

For a race that featured plenty of contact and attrition, it was an impressive opening statement. Gerwitz made Love work for it. The No. 9 started alongside Love on the front row and remained one of the strongest cars throughout the night. Gerwitz led 39 laps, nearly matching Love’s total, and recorded the fastest lap of the race at 29.558 seconds.

For stretches, it appeared the season opener could come down to those two cars. Ultimately, Love’s strategy and execution in the closing portion made the difference, but Gerwitz leaves Darlington with 37 points and an immediate place among the early championship contenders. Alan Warneke completed the podium after one of the strongest drives through the field. Starting 11th, Warneke worked his way to third, led 11 laps and finished 13.992 seconds behind Love.

His 35-point night gives the No. 72 an excellent start to the season. Jason Thomas finished fourth after starting ninth. The Lucky Dog Racing driver led a lap and completed 108 of the 110 circuits, finishing two laps down after the field became increasingly spread out through the second half of the race. Charles Allen Jr. provided one of the biggest charges of the evening.

Allen started 19th and climbed all the way to fifth in the No. 97 for Ideal Racing. He led five laps along the way and gained 14 positions, turning what could have been a difficult opening night into a 33-point result. Tyler Wagner finished sixth after starting third, followed by Gary May, Daniel Dunaway, Dylan Chuckry and Robert Wyant rounding out the top 10. For the drivers who stayed out of serious trouble, Darlington provided an opportunity to establish an early foundation.

For everyone else, the Lady in Black collected her share of victims. The race began competitively and remained that way throughout much of the evening. Nine different drivers were credited with leading at least one lap, with Love, Gerwitz and Warneke accounting for the majority but several others briefly working their way into the top spot through racing and strategy. There were 15 lead changes over the 110-lap distance, a strong number for a track where passing can require patience and precision.

But Darlington also demanded respect. Five cautions accounted for 15 laps under yellow, and the incidents became increasingly costly as the race progressed. Several drivers eventually reached the league’s incident threshold and were disqualified before the finish. James Efaw, Dave W.

Allen, Robert T. Burke, Zach Monday, Collin Ettridge and Chuckie W. Allen were all unable to make it to the checkered flag under running status. In simple terms, they could not tame the Lady in Black on opening night.

Efaw completed 84 laps before his race ended. Dave Allen made it through 82 and had led a lap before his night came to an early conclusion. Burke completed 80, Monday 64, Ettridge 45 and Chuckie Allen 41. It was a rough reminder of exactly what Darlington demands.

The track rewards drivers who can find speed without crossing the line into overdriving the car. The narrow groove and abrasive surface punish mistakes, and contact with the wall can quickly turn a manageable night into a race-ending problem. That combination made Race 1 a major test for a field entering a fresh season. Love handled it best.

Even after leading nearly half the race, the victory was not simply a matter of having the fastest car. The closing portion required the No. 1 to manage the strategy correctly, maintain track position and execute without giving Gerwitz or the rest of the field an opening. That final piece completed what had already been a dominant night. The opening race also immediately created several storylines worth watching as Season 2 develops.

Gerwitz showed enough speed to lead 39 laps and challenge for the victory. Warneke gained eight positions and left with a podium. Thomas and Charles Allen Jr. both climbed through the field, while Wagner remained near the front despite not having the same late-race pace as the leaders. Meanwhile, several drivers who expected better starts to the season already find themselves needing a rebound in Race 2.

That is the nature of an 18-race season. One poor night does not decide a championship—but giving away points early can become expensive later. After Darlington, Love leads with 43 points, followed by Gerwitz at 37 and Warneke at 35. Thomas sits fourth with 34, Charles Allen Jr. fifth at 33 and Wagner sixth with 32.

Daniel Dunaway and Gary May are tied at 30, Chuckry has 28 and Wyant rounds out the top 10 with 27. There is obviously a long way to go. But the first race has established the standard. Darlington lasted 1 hour, 10 minutes and 18 seconds, featured five cautions for 15 laps, 15 lead changes among nine leaders and carried a strength of field of 1,677.

It was messy at times. It was strategic at others. It tested patience, tire management and the ability to simply keep the car underneath you. That is exactly what racing at Darlington is supposed to do.

And when the field finally reached the checkered flag, Love had been both the fastest and the smartest when it mattered.
