Romano Wins Bristol Thriller as Clark’s Late Spin Shakes Up the Chase

BRISTOL, Tenn. — For most of the afternoon, Coulter Clark had Bristol Motor Speedway under his control. By the time the checkered flag fell, Chris Romano had the trophy—and the AARN Cup Series championship fight had tightened again. Romano captured the third race of the Chase, holding off Chris Winstone by 0.698 seconds after a late spin sent Clark out of command and into the unfamiliar position of fighting back through traffic. W.

Casey Gross finished third, just 0.871 seconds behind the winner, as Bristol delivered a tense conclusion to a race repeatedly interrupted by caution flags. The victory was Romano’s fifth of the season and first of the Chase, ending Clark’s run of consecutive postseason wins at Darlington and Gateway. It also moved the No. 44 within 10 points of the championship lead. Romano and Clark were the defining forces throughout the 256-lap event.

Romano started from the pole and led 47 laps, while Clark took control for a race-high 194 laps after starting fourth. Between them, the two accounted for 241 laps out front—more than 94 percent of the race. But Bristol had one more change in store. Clark’s late spin transformed the closing battle.

Instead of controlling the pace and making everyone else find a way around him, the No. 54 suddenly had to recover positions with the race running out. Romano was positioned to capitalize, and the No. 44 converted the opportunity into a victory. This was not a case of the winner appearing at the front for the first time when trouble struck. Romano had qualified first, spent substantial time in the lead and shown the speed to challenge throughout the afternoon.

When Clark’s race changed, Romano was ready to finish the job. Winstone made sure the final margin stayed close. The No. 37 started fifth and finished second, giving Romano less than a second of breathing room at the checkered flag. Gross followed directly behind in the No. 77, putting the entire podium within nine-tenths of a second.

After 18 cautions for 72 laps, the finishing positions still came down to small margins. The interruptions repeatedly brought the field back together and made it difficult to turn a strong run into a secure result. Nine lead changes were recorded among four drivers, but Clark spent far more time out front than anyone else. His 194 laps led represented more than three-quarters of the distance, and his 14.859-second fastest lap narrowly bettered Romano’s 14.861.

For the No. 54, the ingredients for a third consecutive Chase victory were there. The finish was not. Clark ultimately recovered to sixth, only 0.017 seconds behind Elijah Maupin in fifth. He completed every lap and still earned bonuses for leading, leading the most laps and setting the fastest lap.

Those three points lifted his total to 41 and helped prevent the late spin from becoming a much larger championship setback. In fact, Clark left Bristol with a slightly bigger lead over Shawn Hughes than he had entering it. Hughes finished fourth and earned 40 points. Clark’s bonus-supported total was one better, stretching the gap between them from six points to seven despite Hughes finishing two positions ahead.

Romano, however, gained ground on both. His 45-point winning total moved him to 1,175 points, compared with Clark’s 1,185 and Hughes’ 1,178. Romano remains third, but he is now only three points behind Hughes and 10 behind the championship leader. Three Chase races are complete, and the top three are separated by just 10 points.

Winstone’s runner-up finish was a strong result outside the championship field, while Gross’ podium provided a much-needed boost to his own postseason campaign. The No. 77 started sixth, completed all 256 laps and earned 41 points. Gross remains 10th in the Chase with 1,097 points, 88 behind Clark. The deficit is still substantial, but Bristol supplied the kind of front-running finish he needed after a difficult opening to the postseason.

For Hughes, fourth place kept the regular-season champion firmly in the fight. He started second and finished 1.371 seconds behind Romano, collecting another top-five result without allowing the championship to get away from him. The No. 75 has not yet won during the Chase, but with only seven points to recover, Hughes remains close enough that one finishing position or a handful of bonuses can change the order. Maupin also delivered an important result.

Starting eighth, the No. 66 led 14 laps and finished fifth, earning 40 points. That moved him one position higher to fourth in the championship with 1,131 points. His position improved, although his deficit to the leader increased by one point to 54. It was another example of how demanding the pace at the front has become: a top-five finish and a lap-led bonus were enough to climb the standings, but not quite enough to gain on Clark.

Douglas Scalice followed a similar pattern. The No. 16 started 16th and advanced to eighth, completing all 256 laps and collecting 36 points. Scalice moved into fifth in the Chase with 1,121 points, but now trails Clark by 64. The full-distance top-10 finish was a productive result, particularly compared with the trouble that affected several competitors farther down the order.

It kept Scalice moving forward in the championship positions, even as the leading three continued to build separation. Joe Konen finished seventh between Clark and Scalice. Thadeeus Freel Jr. placed ninth, while Austin Adams advanced from 17th to complete the top 10, one lap behind. For Zackery King, Bristol brought another costly result.

The No. 51 started ninth but completed only 25 laps, leaving him last among the 21 starters. His 23-point total dropped him to eighth in the Chase with 1,108 points, 77 behind Clark. King began the postseason near the front of the reset standings. Three races later, the combination of lost points and missed opportunities has left him needing a significant turnaround.

Jordane Whyte also surrendered ground without taking the green flag. His total remained at 1,118 points, dropping him from fourth to sixth and leaving him 67 behind the leader. With Romano winning and Hughes and Clark continuing to score well, a scoreless round came at an expensive time. Corey Powell moved ahead of King into seventh with 1,109 points after finishing 12th.

Chad Fox remains ninth in the championship at 1,105 following an 11th-place race result. Gross holds 10th, followed by Gregory Vadnais at 1,053 and Mike Alley at 1,047. Bristol offered very different outcomes within that group. Some drivers gained positions by completing the distance.

Others lost significant ground before the race reached its decisive stretch. At the front, though, the story remained Romano and Clark. Clark had the most laps led, the fastest lap and the strongest claim to control of the afternoon. Romano had the pole, race-winning speed and the opportunity when the No. 54 spun late.

One left knowing how close he had come to another victory. The other left with the win that put him directly on the championship leaders’ heels. Clark still leads. Hughes is seven points behind.

Romano is 10 back—and now has a Chase victory of his own. At Bristol, the No. 54 controlled most of the race. The No. 44 made the finish count.
