A race that appeared firmly in Coulter Clark’s control unraveled in the closing stages Saturday morning at North Wilkesboro Speedway, opening the door for Chris Romano to capture a pivotal victory in the Cup Series.
Romano survived a caution-filled 225-lap event and capitalized on late-race adversity for multiple frontrunners to secure the win in Race 13 of the season, strengthening his position in the championship standings while tightening an already tense playoff battle around the cut line.
The North Wilkesboro event featured eight cautions, 32 caution laps, and multiple momentum swings as drivers wrestled for track position around the historic short track. Although only four official lead changes were recorded, the race itself was far from straightforward, with pit-road mistakes, restart miscues, and early-race damage dramatically altering the outcome.
Romano started fourth and steadily maintained position near the front throughout the afternoon. While several drivers showed superior outright speed during portions of the race, the No. 44 team consistently avoided the major setbacks that derailed many contenders.
The race’s first major turning point came almost immediately.
On Lap 3, contact involving the No. 34 of Chris Perry and the No. 16 of Douglas Scalice resulted in heavy damage to Scalice’s machine. The early incident forced the No. 16 team into recovery mode for the remainder of the race and immediately reshaped the complexion of the field.
Despite the damage, Scalice continued and ultimately salvaged a 12th-place finish, limiting what could have become a disastrous points day entering the final stretch of the regular season.
As the race settled into rhythm, Clark emerged as the dominant force.
After starting third, the No. 54 machine controlled much of the middle portion of the event and eventually led a race-high 158 laps. Clark consistently maintained superior pace on long green-flag runs and recorded the fastest lap of the race with an 18.315-second circuit on Lap 222.
By the final quarter of the race, Clark appeared firmly positioned to secure what would have been one of the season’s most commanding victories.
But North Wilkesboro’s narrow racing groove and constant restart pressure continued creating opportunities for mistakes.
A late-race speeding penalty on pit road proved catastrophic for Clark’s afternoon. The penalty erased his commanding track position and forced the No. 54 team to fight back through traffic during the closing laps rather than controlling the race from the lead.
The setback immediately shifted the balance of power to Romano and the remaining frontrunners.
Romano capitalized on the opportunity and assumed control during the closing stages while maintaining enough pace to withstand pressure from Jordane Whyte over the final run.
Whyte delivered one of the strongest overall performances of the afternoon, finishing second after leading 20 laps and maintaining top-five pace throughout the race. The runner-up result further solidified Whyte’s standing among the series’ most consistent contenders entering the postseason push.
Clark ultimately recovered to finish third despite the costly penalty, a result that reflected both the speed of the No. 54 car and the frustration of losing control of a race that had largely belonged to him.
Further behind the leaders, the race’s closing restarts produced additional drama.
Zackery King entered the late stages as a potential challenger for the win after leading 25 laps earlier in the event. However, King’s afternoon unraveled on a late restart when the No. 51 spun the tires, slammed the outside wall, and sustained race-altering damage that dropped him outside serious contention.
The incident proved especially significant in the championship picture, as King entered the race holding the series points lead.
Shawn Hughes quietly delivered one of the day’s strongest recovery drives, advancing from 15th to finish fifth while avoiding major incidents throughout the event. The finish allowed Hughes to remain firmly positioned near the top of the standings entering the closing races before the Chase field is finalized.
One of the more notable performances deeper in the field belonged to Chris Winstone. After starting 12th, Winstone climbed to fourth and completed the race with zero incident points, one of the cleanest performances among the lead contenders in a caution-heavy event.
The race’s eight cautions continually reset the field and prevented long green-flag rhythm from fully taking hold. Restarts became increasingly aggressive as the laps wound down, particularly among drivers battling near the Chase cut line.
Track position remained critical throughout the afternoon, but North Wilkesboro’s tight confines also punished even minor mistakes. Several drivers who showed winning speed at various stages ultimately lost significant ground through penalties, restart issues, or contact.
As the regular season enters its final phase, Saturday’s race may ultimately prove to be one of the most consequential events yet in the AARN Cup Series championship battle.
Championship Picture Intensifies
With the postseason approaching, the North Wilkesboro race significantly tightened the standings entering the final stretch of the regular season.
Despite his late-race damage, King retained the series points lead with 490 points, though Hughes now trails by only 18 markers after his fifth-place finish.
Romano’s victory strengthened his position in third place while Whyte’s runner-up finish moved the No. 83 firmly into the championship conversation.
The battle near the cut line also tightened considerably. Marc Bender currently occupies the 10th and final transfer position by only a single point over Chad Fox.
Drivers including Kristopher Foote, Robert Hissong, Elijah Maupin, and Gregory Vadnais remain within realistic striking distance as the regular season pressure continues building.
Meanwhile, Clark’s dominant performance despite the late setback reinforced that the No. 54 team may still possess some of the strongest raw pace in the series entering the postseason.
