Barnes Passes Hyatt on Final Lap to Win Bristol Thriller in Race 5

The All American Racing Network’s O’Reilly’s Series Presented by Ideal Pest Management LLC delivered its most dramatic finish of the season at Bristol Motor Speedway, where Christian Barnes completed a decisive last-lap pass to win Race 5.

After 164 laps of intense short-track racing, Barnes overtook Joshua Hyatt at the line, securing victory by just 0.175 seconds in a race that came down to execution in the final corner.

Front Row Controls Early, Field Stays Tight

From the green flag, the race immediately centered around the front row starters.

Barnes (P1) and Hyatt (P2) established themselves as the primary contenders early, combining to lead a significant portion of the race. Barnes led 35 laps, while Hyatt controlled 30 laps, as the two traded control through the opening and middle stages.

Behind them, the field remained tightly packed, with drivers working through traffic and managing tire wear over long green-flag stretches.

King Dominates Mid-Race Before Late Fade

The middle portion of the race belonged to Zackery King.

Starting third, King took control and led a race-high 70 laps, appearing to have the strongest pace in the field. However, despite that dominance, his race unraveled late, finishing 15th after completing only 123 laps.

That shift proved to be one of the defining turning points of the race, opening the door for the late-race battle between Barnes and Hyatt.

Late-Race Battle Sets Up Classic Finish

As the race entered its final phase, Hyatt positioned himself at the front and appeared in control.

Maintaining track position and navigating traffic, Hyatt led late and held the advantage coming to the white flag. Barnes, however, remained within striking distance, applying pressure without overcommitting.

That patience paid off.

Final Lap Pass Decides the Race

On the final lap, Barnes made his move.

Using momentum and positioning, he completed the pass on Hyatt in the closing moments, taking the lead just before the checkered flag. The margin of victory — 0.175 seconds — reflected how closely contested the finish was.

Hyatt settled for second after leading late, while Douglas Scalice completed the podium in third with a consistent, mistake-free run.

Big Movers and Quiet Consistency

Several drivers delivered standout performances deeper in the field:

  • Ryan Testa advanced from 23rd to 6th, one of the biggest moves of the race
  • Joseph Essenberg climbed from 12th to 4th, capitalizing on late-race attrition
  • John Cook gained 14 positions (22nd → 8th), showing strong recovery pace

Meanwhile, several early contenders fell out of the race:

  • Adam Ramsey (started 4th) finished 14th after completing 123 laps
  • King’s late fade from a dominant position reshaped the outcome entirely
